Set nearly two years after Knight Commander and Knight on Hope Station, the Earth Confederation has suffered heavy losses and the Republic of Sol’s tactics resulted in the Stellar Defense Forces retreat nearly all the way to Jericho. In a last ditch effort to provide the Confederate home planet with maximum protection, Knight is promoted from Commander to Captain and appointed to command the refitted battleship CSS Yorktown. In her stead, Teri is promoted to command Avenger. Following the change in commands, each officer now has to adjust in their new positions and both feel the absence of the other after having spent so much time serving alongside each other. After launching her battleship, Knight’s new commanding admiral appoints her in command of a small task force, whose mission is to take back territory lost during one of the Republican advances. However, during the journey, news of an all-out attack on Jericho reaches her, and she must make a decision for her and her task force; whether to go back to Jericho and witness the fall or abandon her post and head for Hope Station…
